Vintage Record Players Tube Amplified - Mono

©2010Ultraelectronicative.com
Record Players

are defined as a device that plays records, but due to historic developments describes today a stand alone and self contained electronic unit, that plays records by means of having a built-in amplifier and speaker. Record Players do not have any facilities to play records automatically, nor do most units turn off after having played a record. One would have to get up and manually put another record on, or turn the unit off. Automatic units are RECORD CHANGERS. Most records players were considered portable, but come form a time before technology made battery operation possible ( DC motors and semi conductors lacked). Thus 98% of record players are dependent on AC power, which restrics portability to the nearest power outlet.
©2010Ultraelectronicative.com
Record players in gneral are self contained - nothing else needed to play recrods, but as in a world of their own, they do not provide inputs or outputs to connect to other audio devices. This basically menas: Records can be played, but not recorded. So, If wishing to record form records: let me custom modfy your record player, or get one here that already includes the needed work. The details in my item descriptions indicate such detail.
©2010Ultraelectronicative.com
Battery operated record players are rare and hard to find. Likely reasons: The needed technology became available when the record age already declined, AND: records are subject to dust / dirt contamination, which makes these less ideal in environements where portable electronics would be used. So: I see them very rarely, which means: grab one when I have it available, because there is more demand than supply!

Battery operated record players for 78's? Impossible to find! Because: when the technology finally became available to make this feasible: 78's were poo-poo-ed as obsolte! So: Grab any battery operated 78 Player when it is available, as it's availablity won't last!

Description: This USA made quality portable record player PA was first refurbished and then modified for a modern Direct Drive platter motor. the platter motor was custom modified for 4 speed. It plays standanrd and transcription records up to 16" at 16, 34, 45 and 78 RPM, The vintage 1950's magnetic cartridge includes a 78 RPM stylus, which can be rotated in to play 78's. Listen to records at the very best: tube amplified with magnetic cartridge. the amplfier was meant for Public adress purposes and provides a good amount of volume. Either one or 2 of the included suit case type speakers can be hooked up - The unit is mono. The unit truely sounds amazing: full and warm tube sound! This record player is completely self contained, meaning it operates stand alone. It's tube amplifier is complete with power and output trasnforemrs. There is a 1/4" Mic imput ( and another "radio" input which can be mixed with the material being played form the record player with a separate volume control. A Quite an amazing piece of gear to have: built rugged for commercial aplications and designed with attention to detail.
The unit was fully refurbished: complete amplifier refurb, custom motor modification (direct drive + 4 speed). This unit is now ready for years of trouble free service! A great standalone unit to listen to those old records in authentic vintage tube Hi-Fi sound again! For the tube lovers: Great warm detail rich tube sound. And: This unit uses a quality Genral electric magnetic cartridge.

Condition: Excelelnt physical condition - Clean, with minor, but typical signs of wear and age. Overall physical apprearance: nice and clean. Mechancially and electronically in perfect working condition - completely refurbished: amplifier, motor custom modified - direct drive + 4 speed. Stylus: vintage new. There are a couple of shorcommings however: As the tone arm of this player is extra long for 16" transcription records it puts more load on the motor than what is was originally designed for. This results in the record (LP) playing about 1-2% slower at the beginning than at the end. This is not recognizable as the speed variation happnes very gradually. I could look into what it would take to modify the motor for more torque, but likely $200-$300. Otherwise: Not really a problem - the motor cna handle it. And: the design of the amplfier is such that the magnetic field of the power transformer feeds a slight amount of hum into the amplifier. The next model up from this record player addressed the issue by placing the transformer at a different location. for an additional cost of $100-$200 I can do the same.

Work performed to restore this unit as presented: Complete overhaul of the amplifier: replaced all capcitors and all out of tolerance resistors. Upgraded some capacitors and the Kathode bypass resistor of the output tube with higher grade components, re-worked all contacts, controls and switcheds, custom modified the motor for 4 speed - modified turntable with a direct drive motor and modern platter, cleaned and re-lubricated all mechanical parts. Performed adjustmetns, restorred for long-term reliability;Performed physical cleaning and detail work, full functional test: Perfect

Commercial Grade Battery Operated
USA made Mini Portable Record Player

Refurbished - Reliably working

16 / 33 / 45 / 78 RPM

Battery Operated 4 Speed Portable Record Player

Features:

Battery (D-cells) or AC operated (9V)
• Plays all 4 speeds (16, 78, 33, 45 RPM)
• 1/4" External speaker / Mono headphone connector
• Motor stop switch to interupt play.

Description: This recrod player is probably the smallest 4 speed player available: Only 10 1/2 x 9 1/4". Likely this unit was made between 1967 and 1968 in the USA by, or for Johnny Stewart. It was made to play animal sounds out in anture to attract them, but as a battery operated portable player, as versitile as it is, it can be used for a variety of purposeses: Have a battery operated portable along when you buy vintage records, Have a record player as a conversation piece where no one else has one (battery operated!) such as at the beach, Play 16 RPM I AM records, or use it for its original pupose to attract animals. It features commercial grade heavery duty construction and plays all 4 speeds (16, 33, 45, 78 RPM). The cartridge has a flip over stylus, for which LP / 78 RPM are available (Currently installed stylus: LP/LP). This unit is made extrmely well. It uses European electronic parts. This player features a built-in amplifier (about 1 W output power) with volume control and offers a 1/4" jack for external speaekr or mono headphone connection. Originally it came with a horn speaker (shown), but I can ship it with a Hi-Fi speaker instead for better sound quality if using it for music. It actually sounds pretty good with a Hi-Fi speaker for music! I refurbished this player and it is in great working condition. I installed a new cartridge into it. The unit works with batteries (6 or 12 "D" cells, install 6, or 12 if you want the battery to last very long), or plug in the supplied AC adater if using where AC is available. The power supply that will be delivered with it, is auto switching and can be used on AC voltages form 100-240V AC. The horn speaker connects mechanically to the lid for easier carryting.

Condition: Good physical condition: typical signs of wear and age. Overall physical apprearance: Clean. Mechancially and electronically in well working condition - refurbished.

Work performed to restore this unit as presented: Replaced the cartridge with a new one (the original was bad and had only LP stylus options) Cleaned, degreased and re-lubricated all mechanical parts, reworked parts in the drive meachanism, Modified for AC operation: added DC jack (cuts off battery when AC is used) and added power supply (shown in the picture, left). The performed labor so far to refurbish and modify the unit has been in $200 range not considering any of the installed parts!

Lot: 1 Johnny Stewart Portable Battery operated Record Player, complete with lid and speaker (choose the horn speaker as shown, or a Hi-Fi speaker - Please indicate which you want!), and slighly used LP/LP stylus (was only used ot test the unit), auto switching AC adapter included (100-240 V AC to 9 V DC), unit as described above

Price: $185.00

ADD ON's and options:

1) LP/78 Stylus to play 78's and all other types of records. $12.00

2) Refurbish amplifier: While still working nicely, the amplifier of this unit still has all original capacitors installed. Their age possibly can produce future problems. To replace them, so that the amplfier will work "like new" and realibly for decades will be: $100.00

3) Upgrade Motor: the currently installed DC motor is vitnage and electromechanically controlled, known as a "governor motor", which are not very accurate. To upgrade with a modern electronically controlled motor, which is more speed acurate anquieter (the governor motor runns at about 5% too fast, which cannot be adjusted). Add $100.00 I may or may not be able to do this mod - depending if a suitable motor can be found)

3) Upgrade the Mic Pre-amp wiring: There is a 1/4" mic input and a mcicrophone pre-amp, which currently does not work very well, as un-shielded wirng is used. I can upgrade the wiring and see to that it will work properly. Add: $50-100.00 (Depending on what will be needed)

4) Get Both: Horn and Hi-Fi speakers (one each): add: $25

5) Add the animal sound records: All 11 add for: $55 or $6.00 ea. Titles can be viewed here

Fully portable: perfect to take along to swap meets, flea markets, antique and thrift stores for record purchasing!
Has included AC powers supply for AC Operation.
Built-In cassette player!
Belt driven turntable

Description: Imagine a battery operated portable record player that plays 78s - Impossibleyou may think, but badly needed! Here why: Old music on 78's has gotten quite expensive these days. Many of us are too young to remeber the artists. In the old days we just bought the whole stack and listened at home to sort out what we liked, but high record prices of today inhibit that. The solution? A portable record player that can be brouhgt to the records in the filed wihout special requiremets, nor to disturb anybody - Have the needed equipment to listen before you buy! Exactly that was my goal with modifying this unit. To gain this wonderful device I had to: repair it first, then restore it, then custom modify it. My modifications include: the speed upgrade to 78 (now plays 33, 45, 78), a headphone jack for private listening, and circuit upgrades that makes the original power switching more usable over the original design. Unfortunately all of the above took tremendous amounts of my work time, so please excuse my relatively high price (which actually does not caver the amount of labor I put into this unit!) - Treasure this extremely rare find! (I am not shure if I will modify another unit - due to the loss in asking price versus actual labor time spent)

Condition: Excellent physical condition - Shows little signs of wear. Stylus still has protective cover and I beleive was not used much at all. (actual unit shown in photo - will be glad to provide higher resolution images). Mechancially and electronically in well working condition - completely refurbished. Overall condition: excellent. 9/10 !

Work performed to restore this unit as presented: Repaired the record player. Replaced turtnable and cassette player drive belts. Re-worked the platter bushing. Overhaul of the amplifier: re-soldered aged points; re-worked all contacts, controls and switcheds restored for long-term reliability; Cleaned, degreased, cleaned and re-lubricated all mechanical parts, reworked parts in the drive meachanism (cassete and record player), Custom modification to 3 speed; added headphone jack, modified so that TT motor is off when cassette deck is in use, circuit modification for less hum (and other minor mods); Full functional test: OK.

Professional Tube Mono Record Players + PAs:

These units will be Refurbished To order:
2-7 Weeks Lead Time - Price Range: Fully restorred typically: $300-$800. The goal with my work: to bring these professional record player back as close as possible to original specifications and to provide reliably working condition for decades to come. This takes hours and hours and HOURS of paistaking detail orineted work. Thus prices based on the amount of time and parts needed (some are quite hard to find! - which again takes time!) to achieve this goal. Shop time to refurbish equipment to order (applies to ALL units shown in this section!) is in SHORT SUPPLY, so I may not be able to serve you very quickly, especially during late fall, winter and the first two months of the of the new year. Rushing it and vintage audio equipment, or pushing for "discount prices" DO NOT GO TOGETHER! It takes as much time as it takes. If needing to rush: Please buy "AS-IS" or go some place else. Thank you! - I do not compromise on this, as my goal is to provide quality products in every detail.
