Cassette Decks
were first introduced in about 1966 when the compact cassette was a novelty. It did away with the time consuming tape threading of open reel tape and provided a recording medium that was as it's name said: compact resulting in much smaller and lighter equipment.
However: Due to the much smaller tape medium, which was half of the width, thinner and not as long, sound quality was compromised if compared to open reel tape. Thus efforts pushed technical advancements, such as higher grade recording medium (Chrome Dioxyde and Metal tapes), higher resolution recording and play tape heads, and advanced noise reduction systems (such as Dolby C and dbx). In the 80's technological advancement perfected the cassette deck and sound quality approched that of previous open reel tape decks. So: cassette decks on from the mid 80's on are among those with the lowest noise figures and highest frequency responses.

For those who like analog recording out in the field onto a compact recording medium, a professional portable tape deck form the 80's might just yield the best results. I used a Marantz PMD 430 for binaural nature sound recordings and eneded up with amazing recordings that tranferred well into the digital domain.

As with all vintage audio equipment, cassette decks are subject to wear and aging. If one is found in still working condition that won't do much good, as the effects of time have rendered the deck in less than optimum condition, even if it apppears in prefect condition with little use . And more likely than not, it won't perform good for very long, unless properly serviced and restorred. These traces of time cause in varying dgress: Rubber parts wear and age, lurication hardens or dires out, heads wear, solder points become brittle or intermittened, and contacts, controlls, connectors become dirty and oxydized and other parts shift out of tolerance or electrolytic capacitos leak current resulting in: wow and flutter, dirty and noisy signals, poor audio quality.
My goal with any equipment that I am offering refurbished is to address ALL of above issues where ever possible to provide equipment that performs as close as possible to original spoecifications and reliable - hopefully for decades to come. Quality work takes tremendous resources of work time and parts, which often are hard to find. Please take these facts into consideration when evaluating the prices shown here.

Description - Fostex XR-7: If wishing to do analog multi track recording or having old 4 track tapes previously recorded to transfer to digital: look no further: This is the deck you are looking for! This recorder is like "new" and was made by Fostex in Japan - a well established brand name in analog multi track recroders - and I would call it a "second generation" deck, as manuafctured at the paek times of when analog recording equipment was made, meaning: it is quite sophisticated, as previously missing features were added.
Condition: This deck appears not to have been used at all. The heads and pich rollers appear like new. Likely it sat unused for decades. I tested the deck and it performs to specs. It was missing one slider cap and needed a good exterior cleaning. There is one thing less than perfect with this deck: Due to age (dust) some of the controls are ever so slightly scratchy when moved (only noticeable to the professionally trained ear) It does not affect the performance. Vintage USA Early Hi-FI Stereo Cassette Deck
This Vintage Cassete deck is unusual, as it was sold in about 1974 as a kit - for the skilled Hi-Fi Enthusiast to put together himseff from parts, and to perform all alignments on it (!). At the price of 1 months rent at which it sold, it must be a quality deck, which it is. It is contructed with a very rugged meachanism that reminds of athat in a reel to reel deck (A heavy duty AC synchronous motor - huge fly wheel) The transport was furbished by Wollnesak (The deck looks like a Wollensak or Advent deck) and the Kit for the entire deck was sold by Heathkit under the model number: AD-1530. It is constructed with highest quality electronic components avaialbe at the time as well.
This unit's dolby processor seems to be very similar to the Advent 100-A stand alone Dolby unit. The special features of this deck are: The Dolby circuit offers alignment points. There is a mono switch that allows the deck to operate in mono and MIC inputs that can manually be switched to override the line input. And the deck provides it's own internal alignment gneerator that can be switched in and assiged to various test points vi aa hard wired alligator clip.
I have yet to find out what moved people so much to spend a months rent on this deck - Compact Cassette became popular in about 1969. I put the needed restoration work in, to have this basically fully working and working well, but have not fully tested yet. I found an original manual for it (which I iwll include with the unit), but did not find the tiem yet, to check and tweak its alignments. I read that this deck is supposed to be equal in sound to a quality of a reel to reel deck. When this deck is ready (refurbished, aligned and tested) I probably will offer it in the $150-$245 range. SONY Portable HiFi Cassette Recorder
Description: In 1972 - a few years after the compact cassette had appeared on the market the appearance of this portable cassette recorder was quite a novelty: Minature, Portable, battery operated recording with still for today amazing recording quality. In the SONY broschure from the time it is described as: "the finest minature recroder", which is true because it appears to have been made form the finest materials: meltal enclosure with very rugged construnction. Sony says: "the exciting new recorder is ready to go places, so take it away". If you value mono analog recording this still stands true, because: "Sony's built in condenser microphone actually picks up "whispers form across the room" (SONY) The unit offers many other features: bult-in speaker, external Mic hack with start/stop control, 3 digit mini tape counter, recording/battery level meter and more.
Condition: I repaired/restored this unit, so that it fully and works well again. It was a lot of work as all is so tightly fit together, but I replaced the drive belt, cleanred rubber wheels, lubricated mechanical parts, and treated contact and switches with contact cleaner. (about a $150 job).

Description: This is one of the first portable stereo cassette recorders that hit the market when the compact cassette took off in the late 60's! Look at the detail pictures this is quite a cool rig! Vintage analog recording at it's best with truly vintage equipment! Perfect for these day's fashionable vintage "Lo-Fi" recordings but the original owenr's manual of this unit praises this deck as: "gives true high fidelity stereophonic performance. Automatic recording via external microphone or line level inputs". This lot is more than just the deck and consits of the SONY deck Stereo Mic, speakers, and accessories. The deck is quite vesitile as a portable stereo cassette deck as it runs on batteries, can be connected to the 12V cigarette socket in a car or can be operated on AC.
